In All Of The Stories The Hero Gets Lonely

Ever notice something kinda sad about all your favorite heroes? Yeah, they save the world, find the treasure, get the girl/guy… but they’re also, like, super lonely. It’s almost a guaranteed plot point: the hero gets lonely.
The World-Saving Blues
Think about it. Harry Potter? Spent a good chunk of his adolescence feeling misunderstood and isolated, even WITH Ron and Hermione! Frodo Baggins? Returns from Mordor a changed hobbit, unable to really connect with the Shire anymore. Poor guy!
Even superheroes aren't immune. Superman, arguably the most powerful being on Earth, pines for Krypton and struggles to truly fit in. He’s got Lois Lane, sure, but he still carries that weight of being different.

Why So Serious (ly Lonely)?
So, why is loneliness such a common thread in heroic narratives? Maybe it's because being "the chosen one" is inherently isolating. Who else can truly understand what they've been through?
It's like being the only person who knows the secret to a really good guacamole recipe. You could share it, but it just won't be the same. No one will appreciate it the way you do.

The Cost of Being Extraordinary
Another reason? The hero often has to sacrifice something personal for the greater good. Think of Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games." She volunteers to save her sister, but it comes at the cost of her innocence and peace of mind.
Sometimes it's love. Sometimes it's a normal life. But something's always gotta give. It's the price of greatness, or at least surviving a dystopian young adult novel.

Even funny heroes get the blues. Iron Man, with all his quips and gadgets, is fundamentally driven by a desire to make up for his past mistakes. That's a heavy burden, and it creates distance.
It's Not All Doom and Gloom (Mostly)
Okay, okay, it sounds depressing. But there’s a glimmer of hope! The hero's loneliness often highlights the importance of connection and community. Their journey shows us the value of the relationships.

The hero needs people! Even if they’re destined for greatness, they still crave understanding, support, and a good hug. It reminds us that even super-powered beings are still human (or hobbit, or elf).
A Lesson in (Heroic) Empathy
Ultimately, the lonely hero teaches us empathy. We see their vulnerability, their sacrifices, and their longing for connection. We realize that even those who seem invincible face internal struggles.

So, next time you're reading a book or watching a movie, pay attention to the hero's moments of solitude. It's a reminder that even in the most fantastical stories, there’s a very real and relatable human experience.
Plus, knowing that even Batman probably just wants someone to binge-watch Netflix with makes him a little less intimidating, right?
"It is not our abilities that show what we truly are… it is our choices." –Albus Dumbledore, probably wishing he had a better social life.
