I Think You Should Leave Haunted House Episode

Okay, Hear Me Out: Haunted Houses Should Be Scarier.
I know, I know. This might be controversial. We all love I Think You Should Leave, especially the haunted house episode. But am I the only one who thinks it's...underwhelmingly spooky?
Don't get me wrong! The premise is gold. A guy in a full-body mummy costume screaming about a kid who's definitely gonna snap. Pure brilliance.
The Build-Up is Perfect.
The tension! The other patrons' reactions! Tim Robinson's face! Chef's kiss. It’s all building to this terrifying climax.
Must Read
And then…it’s just a dude yelling. A really committed dude, sure. But still, just yelling.
I'm not saying I want chainsaws and jump scares. But maybe...a flickering light? A spooky sound effect?
Let's Talk About Ronnie.
Specifically, let's talk about what Ronnie is yelling about. He's protecting a little kid. Which, admirable! But also, not that scary.

He's gone mad protecting a kid. Is it because he saw what I saw? Was the child cursed? Is the mummy cursed? We will never know.
Imagine if he was screaming about something truly disturbing. Like...tax audits. Or slow walkers in the grocery store. Now that's horror.
Am I Asking For Too Much?
Probably. The beauty of ITSL is its absurdity. But still! A girl can dream of a haunted house that actually haunts, right?
I think the true horror of the episode is the commitment to mediocrity. The haunted house operators are probably just trying to get through the night.

Like, imagine being the actor playing the mummy. Day in, day out, the same thing. He probably thinks about getting out of his mummy costume.
The Power of Suggestion.
Maybe the lack of actual scares is the point. Maybe it’s all about the suggestion of terror. Like, the people thinking "What is this guy talking about?" is scarier than some scary mummy dude.
We're all projecting our own fears onto Ronnie's incoherent ramblings. So it's scary because our minds are filling in the blanks.
Still, I feel a little cheated. I want a little more! Give me some special effects! A little blood! A little...

Okay, Okay, I Get It.
Fine, fine. I admit it. The brilliance of the haunted house sketch lies in its subversion of expectations. Tim Robinson is genius.
It’s funny because it’s not scary. It’s funny because it’s relatable. We’ve all been in situations where someone is overreacting to something mildly inconvenient.
But deep down, a tiny part of me still yearns for a truly terrifying I Think You Should Leave haunted house. Maybe with animatronics.
My Unpopular Opinion? Maybe It's Right.
So, there it is. My controversial, probably wrong, opinion. The ITSL haunted house episode could be scarier.

I still love the episode! I still laugh every time I watch it. But I just think, maybe, just maybe, a little extra oomph could elevate it to legendary status. It does achieve legendary status anyway.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go re-watch it and overanalyze every single detail. And probably laugh again.
Final Thoughts.
Ultimately, it is the absurd, the unexpected, that makes I Think You Should Leave hilarious. Ronnie is doing his job. We can all agree on that.
And who knows, maybe next season we will be truly and utterly scared.
