How Old Was Sean Connery In First Knight

Let's talk about First Knight. Remember that movie? The one where Sean Connery is King Arthur? Yeah, that one.
It got me thinking. How old was he in that movie? It's a question that pops into my head sometimes.
The Age of the King (and Sean)
Okay, drumroll please... Sean Connery was 64 when First Knight came out in 1995. Sixty-four! That's, like, old.
Must Read
I know, I know. He was still incredibly charismatic. Still rocking that legendary Sean Connery swagger. But still... 64.
My Unpopular Opinion
And here comes the controversial part. I think he was too old to be Arthur in First Knight. Prepare for the backlash!
Don't get me wrong! I love Sean Connery. He is a legend! But Arthur? A valiant, young-ish king? Mmm, not quite.

Historically, Arthur's age is debated, sure. But in most stories, he's portrayed as being in his prime. A leader in his 30s or 40s, maybe.
Connery just seemed... grandfatherly. Less a warrior king, more a wise old advisor. Although, he looked good doing it!
The energy just felt off. The romance with Guinevere seemed less fiery and more... respectful. I can see that Arthur character was tired.
Other Arthurs, Other Ages
Think about other actors who've played Arthur. Clive Owen, for example. He was younger in the movie King Arthur. Or even some of the animated versions.

They all feel closer to the age Arthur is typically presented. Maybe Sean Connery's Arthur was a clever casting choice?
It brought a certain gravitas to the role. A sense of experience and wisdom. But at the cost of youthful vigor.
The Lancelot Factor
Then there's Richard Gere as Lancelot. He was 46. Which, compared to Connery, makes him look like a spring chicken!

The age difference between Arthur and Lancelot almost felt awkward. A generation gap in a love triangle?
Usually, you see the two as close to the same age. It heightens the tension, the betrayal, and the rivalry. This made their tension felt weird.
Did It Really Matter?
Ultimately, did Sean Connery's age ruin the movie? No, probably not. It's still a watchable film with great action sequences.
His performance was still solid, as always. He brought his signature charisma to the role of Arthur, king.

But I can't help but think about it. Would a younger actor have made a difference? Would it have changed the dynamic of the story?
Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm stuck on the traditional image of Arthur as a young, powerful leader. Maybe.
But I'm sticking to my unpopular opinion. Sean Connery was great. But maybe a bit too seasoned for this particular knightly role.
So, tell me, am I alone in this? Or do you secretly agree that Sean Connery was just a tad too old in First Knight?
