Officially, Ethan Cutkosky, the actor, was born in 1999. Season 1 aired in 2011. Math tells us he was around 11 or 12.

Easy peasy, right? Not so fast! This is where my potentially unpopular opinion comes in.

I'm just gonna say it: Carl acts way older than 11. Seriously.

Remember the whole firework incident? The one with the… let’s just say “creative” use of explosives?

An 11-year-old might be curious about fireworks. A 12-year-old, maybe concoct a plan with a buddy.

I think Carl, in Season 1, existed in a weird age limbo. He acted both younger and older than his actual age.

He had moments of genuine childlike innocence. Then, bam! Straight back to being mini-Frank.

It's a testament to Cutkosky's acting, and maybe the writers deliberately blurred the lines.

So, while the official answer is 11 or 12, in my heart, Carl was perpetually stuck between 13 and 30. A true Shameless enigma.

Maybe it was just the Gallagher genes kicking in early. Who knows?
