How Many Times Has The Capitol Been Attacked

Okay, let's talk about the Capitol. You know, that big, white, dome-y building where important-ish stuff happens?
Specifically, how many times has it been, well, attacked? It's a bit more complicated than you think.
Defining "Attack": A Very Unofficial Guide
First, what even counts as an attack? Is it just dudes storming the doors? Or does it include, like, symbolic protests with strongly worded signs?
Must Read
My unpopular opinion? Let's stick to the truly, madly, deeply "uh oh, this is bad" kind of attacks. Less interpretive dance, more actual… chaos.
The British Are Coming! (Again?)
We can't forget 1814. The British showed up and basically threw a house party. Except the house was the Capitol, and the party favors were… fire. Lots of fire.
It was, you know, a whole thing.
They torched it. Like, really torched it. This one definitely counts. No debate here.

The 20th Century and Beyond
Fast forward a bit. Things get... less explode-y, but not necessarily calmer.
In 1954, Puerto Rican nationalists fired shots from the gallery of the House of Representatives. Not cool, guys.
Was this an attack? Yep. Unequivocally, yes. People shooting inside the Capitol is rarely a good sign.

Then, we have the 1983 bombing. A group called the Armed Resistance Unit claimed responsibility. The damage was significant but, thankfully, no one was killed.
Another 'yikes' moment. This one, too, firmly belongs in the "attack" category.
And Then There's January 6th...
Oh boy. January 6th, 2021. The day the Capitol became the setting for a real-life action movie. A not-very-good action movie, admittedly. A lot of folks disagree on how to frame January 6th.

Was it an insurrection? A riot? An afternoon of aggressive tourism? My take? It was definitely an attack.
The sheer scale and intent to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power puts it on the "attack" list for me.
So, What's the Final Count? (Sort Of)
Okay, so if we're playing by my highly subjective rules (and why wouldn't we be?), we've got:

- The British in 1814
- The 1954 Shooting
- The 1983 Bombing
- January 6th, 2021
That's four. Four times the Capitol has been, in my opinion, undeniably attacked. Four times that things went seriously sideways.
Of course, there are other incidents. Protests, disruptions, moments of high tension. But for me, these four stand out as clear instances of a direct attack on the heart of American democracy.
Remember, history is messy! And defining an "attack" is even messier. But hey, at least we're thinking about it.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go build a fort out of pillows. You know, just in case. You can never be too prepared.
