How Many Seasons Of Highschool Dxd Are There

Okay, let's talk High School DxD. You know, the anime that's...well, let's just say it's popular for its, ahem, "plot." But how many seasons are there, really?
The Official Count (and Why I Disagree)
Officially, there are four seasons. Yes, four. We've got High School DxD, High School DxD New, High School DxD BorN, and High School DxD HERO. Feels like a lot, right?
But here's my controversial take: only three of them really count. And I'm willing to die on this hill (probably surrounded by anime figures, let's be honest).

The Case Against Season 4 (HERO)
HERO...oh, HERO. Where do I even begin? Okay, let's start with the obvious: the art style changed. Drastically.
It was like everyone suddenly forgot how to draw the characters we knew and, uh, loved. I mean, I appreciate the effort, but it wasn't the same.
The animation felt different too. Everything just felt...off. Did anyone else feel this way or is it just me? Please tell me I'm not alone!

It's like they replaced the entire animation team with a group of people who'd only heard rumors about what High School DxD looked like.
And it wasn't just the visuals. The story felt rushed. Important plot points were skipped over. Major character development felt...absent.
It's like they crammed a novel's worth of material into a single season. This made the whole experience unsatisfying.

Basically, HERO felt like a fan-made sequel. A very ambitious, but ultimately disappointing, fan-made sequel. I'm sorry, not sorry.
So, What Counts Then?
Okay, so if HERO is out, what are we left with? Three glorious, albeit ecchi-filled, seasons.
The first three seasons delivered on what we expected (and perhaps even more). The story flowed well, the characters were consistent. It was good old DxD!

We had Issei's journey from perverted loser to, well, slightly less perverted hero. Rias's struggle with her family. The introduction of awesome (and sometimes scantily clad) supporting characters.
Those first three seasons captured the spirit of the light novels (for the most part). HERO...not so much.
The Unpopular Opinion
So, here's my official (and highly subjective) opinion. There are three seasons of High School DxD. The fourth season? It's a fun little "what if?" scenario.

It's like that time your favorite band released a new album that sounded nothing like their old stuff. You acknowledge it exists, but you don't really count it.
I know some people love HERO. And that's totally fine! But for me, it's a non-canon alternate timeline. A fever dream, perhaps?
So next time someone asks you how many seasons of High School DxD there are, tell them three. And then brace yourself for the inevitable argument. Good luck!
Just remember, you're not alone. There are dozens of us! Dozens!
