How Many Seasons Does Darling In The Franxx Have

Okay, let's talk about Darling in the Franxx. Specifically, how many seasons it really has. Prepare yourselves, because this might be controversial.
The Official Answer (and Why It's Wrong)
Officially, there's only one season. Yup, just one. A cool 24 episodes. Sounds simple, right?
But is it really just one season? I mean, come on. Think about it.

My Unpopular Opinion: Two Seasons (At Least!)
Here's where I lose some of you. I think Darling in the Franxx feels like two distinct seasons mashed together. Fight me.
The first half? Incredible. We have Zero Two being mysterious. Hiro struggling. The squad learning to pilot their Franxx.
The world-building is fantastic. The relationships are complex. It's all so good!
Then...things change. Drastically. Remember those garden scenes? The whole Papa thing?

Suddenly, aliens are involved. There's a space battle. The tone shifts completely.
This feels like a completely different show slapped onto the first half. Am I the only one who sees it?
It's like they had two different anime ideas and decided, "Nah, let's just throw them both into one."
Think of other anime. Does Attack on Titan feel like one season? No way! It has arcs and big shifts.

It's the same with Darling in the Franxx. We go from character-driven drama to giant robot space opera. That's a season break right there.
The Alien Invasion Argument
The biggest evidence for my two-season theory is the introduction of the VIRM. These aliens come out of nowhere!
Suddenly, the Klaxosaurs aren't the main threat. We're fighting some intergalactic hive mind. It's a major plot twist that completely alters the direction of the story.
Imagine watching a show about samurai and then suddenly spaceships show up. That's basically what happened.
Okay, Maybe Not Officially
Look, I know officially it's one season. Streaming services list it as one season. Wikipedia lists it as one season.

But in my heart, it's two. The pre-alien and post-alien eras. Before VIRM and after VIRM. It's just cleaner that way.
Plus, if it was split into two seasons, maybe the second half wouldn't have felt so rushed. Just a thought.
Maybe with a reboot, in the style of Evangelion we can have a Darling in the Franxx Rebuild. One can only dream!
So, How Many Seasons?
The real answer? As many as you want it to be. If you enjoyed the whole thing as one cohesive story, great!

But if, like me, you feel like it's two different stories glued together, then join the two-season club.
At least we can all agree that Zero Two is awesome, no matter which "season" she's in.
Now, let the debates begin! Do you agree with my controversial opinion, or am I completely off base?
Let me know in the comments. But be nice, please. I'm sensitive. Especially when it comes to my anime opinions.
"Even if we're reborn... I'm sure we'll meet again." - Zero Two
