How Many Seasons Are There Of Stargate Atlantis

Okay, let's talk about Stargate Atlantis. A show near and dear to many a sci-fi heart.
Specifically, let's discuss something deceptively simple: How many seasons does it have? The obvious answer? Five.
But is that really the whole story?
Here's where my unpopular opinion comes in. Prepare yourselves.
Must Read
I say, and brace for impact, there are only three seasons of true Stargate Atlantis.
Hear me out!
Seasons one through three were peak Atlantis. We had the original crew, the mysteries of the Wraith, and the thrill of exploring a brand new galaxy.
Think about it: the Daedalus, the Genii, Dr. Beckett's...unique...sense of humor.
Then, Season Four happened. Major changes. Cast shake-ups. It felt... different, didn't it?

Rodney McKay even had a relationship, could you imagine?!
Suddenly, we're fighting Replicators (again?!). And the Wraith became secondary villains.
It felt like the show was trying to be something it wasn't. Like your favorite band suddenly deciding to go techno.
Season Five? Even more changes! We're on Earth! Atlantis is in San Francisco Bay!

It's... Stargate: Landed, I guess? It's a departure, to say the least.
Don't get me wrong; Season Five had its moments. Jewel Staite was amazing as Dr. Keller.
But fundamentally, it wasn't the same show. It felt like a spin-off of a spin-off.
Think of it like this: if someone told you Firefly had more seasons that aired on Fox, would you consider those seasons real Firefly? I think not!
So, when someone asks me how many seasons of Stargate Atlantis there are, I'll say three with a mischievous grin.

"But...but...there were five!" they'll cry.
And I'll just smile knowingly. "Were there really?"
Look, I'm not saying Seasons Four and Five are bad. They just aren't the Atlantis I fell in love with.
They are different shows using the same name.
Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's just me being stubborn. But I stand by my (unpopular) opinion.

The true heart of Stargate Atlantis beat for three glorious seasons. The rest is, well, a bit of a blur. A fun blur, but a blur nonetheless.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go rewatch "Rising" and pretend the show ended after "Third Contact."
Join me in my denial! It's much more fun over here.
Let the debate begin! I eagerly await your angry (or surprisingly agreeable) comments.
Just remember to keep it civil. We're all fans of Stargate in the end. Even if we disagree on the number of "real" seasons.
