Ghost In The Shell Creator On Casting

Okay, let's talk Ghost in the Shell. Specifically, who gets to play Major Motoko Kusanagi. I know, I know. It's a touchy subject.
I have a confession. I'm not always sure what the creator, Masamune Shirow, was really thinking when he designed her.
My Unpopular Opinion (Maybe?)
Hear me out. We’re always worried about being faithful to the source material.
Must Read
But sometimes? Maybe "faithful" needs a little wiggle room. Maybe it needs a shot of something stronger than green tea.
I'm just saying. Did Shirow-sensei have one specific actress in mind when he drew her?
The Animated Enigma
Think about it. Animated characters are... animated. They're lines and colors. They don't have agents, or schedules, or demanding brunch orders.

Finding a human being who exactly embodies a drawing is like finding a unicorn that can file your taxes. Good luck with that.
The original anime and manga are amazing, absolutely. Shirow's art is iconic.
Beyond the Visual: The Vibe
But shouldn’t we think beyond just looking like the character? Shouldn't it also be about the feeling?
Major isn't just a haircut and a cybernetic body. She's a mood. She is a stoic badass.

It's about that quiet intensity, that barely-contained power. That’s the core of the character, right?
So, maybe casting shouldn’t be a direct photocopy.
Consider the Alternatives...
What if we thought outside the box a bit? What if we looked for someone who embodies the spirit of the Major, even if they don't perfectly match the visuals?

It's about capturing the essence. It's about finding an actress who can make you believe she could take down a tank with her bare hands (and maybe a really cool cybernetic arm).
Think about it: an actress who can act like the Major is much more important than someone who just looks like her.
Let's Get Crazy (Maybe?)
I know, I know, some people will say “blasphemy!”. They demand a perfect visual match. I get it.
But art is about interpretation. It's about taking something existing and making it new, making it your own.

Maybe, just maybe, a little creative license in casting isn’t the end of the world.
Perhaps Masamune Shirow himself would be amused.
So let's not get hung up on the details. Let's focus on the heart of the character. That's the real Ghost in the Shell, isn't it?
Think about what the character embodies. Not just how they look.
That's my two cents. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go re-watch the original anime... for research purposes, of course.
