First Name Of The President On The West Wing

Let's Talk Jed Bartlett
Okay, okay, hear me out. We all love The West Wing. It's practically required viewing for anyone even remotely interested in politics.
But can we talk about Jed? Just Jed. You know, President Josiah Bartlet's ever-so-important first name.
Is "Jed" Really...The Best?
I'm going to say something potentially controversial. I'm not completely sold on "Jed." There, I said it!
Must Read
It feels... a little incomplete, doesn't it? Like the show's waiting for him to grow into it.
It's like naming a golden retriever "Spot" - a little... underwhelming, when it comes to your expectation.
Other Presidents and Their Names
Think about other fictional presidents. You've got President Palmer, President Hayes, President Kirkman.
Strong, confident names. Names that command respect in the situation room.

But Jed? It kinda sounds like your friendly neighbor who brings you cookies. Which, granted, isn't bad!
Unpopular Opinion Time
Maybe this is just me. Maybe I'm overthinking a TV show character's name.
But when I picture the leader of the free world, "Jed" doesn't immediately spring to mind.
I think he would be more intimidating and memorable to the audience with a powerful first name, such as Jackson.

Potential Alternatives
Now, before you grab your pitchforks, I have suggestions! What about Josiah? A bit formal, perhaps, but definitely presidential.
Or even Joe? A classic, approachable name that still carries weight.
I always liked how they referred to Biden as Joe, in this case.
Granted, Jed is easier to say. Shorter and sweeter.
The Man Behind The Name
Of course, Martin Sheen made the name work. Let's be honest, he could be called "Sprinkles" and still deliver an amazing performance.

He embodied the character so completely that the name almost fades into the background. Almost.
Maybe that's the point. The show cares more about the politics and moral challenges of the president, than the first name itself.
Ultimately...
Look, I still love The West Wing. And I still think President Bartlet is one of the best TV presidents ever written.
This is all just a playful observation. A silly thought that popped into my head during my last re-watch.

But seriously, "Jed?" It's something to consider. Am I right, or am I right?
Final Thought
Maybe Jed is perfect because it humanizes him. Shows us a glimpse of the man behind the Oval Office.
Or maybe I still just prefer "Jackson."
Either way, long live The West Wing! And may your own presidential naming choices be inspired.
