First Episode Of One Foot In The Grave

Let's Talk About One Foot in the Grave... Specifically, That First Episode
Okay, hear me out. I'm about to say something potentially controversial. Something that might get me banished from refined TV appreciation circles.
Ready? The first episode of One Foot in the Grave, titled "Alarm Call," is… well, it’s a bit much, isn't it?
The Legend of Victor Meldrew
We all know Victor Meldrew. The grumpy old man we secretly relate to. The king of complaining about everyday absurdities.
Must Read
Richard Wilson played him brilliantly. No argument there!
But in "Alarm Call," they cranked the misery dial up to eleven from the get-go.
The Over-the-Top Outrage
From the very beginning, everything goes wrong. He loses his job. The world is changing too fast.
Then, the garden gnome incident! I mean, really? A garden gnome heist? And someone actually digs up Victor's precious shrubs.

It's a bit much, even for a sitcom about grumbling.
The Sympathetic Sidekick
Poor Margaret. She's the long-suffering wife we all feel for. Annette Crosbie was absolutely fantastic as Margaret. A perfect match for Victor's constant gripes.
In this first episode, Margaret barely has time to breathe. She’s constantly putting out fires (both literal and metaphorical) that Victor seems to ignite on purpose.
The amount of stress she endures in just 30 minutes? Unbelievable!

My (Possibly Unpopular) Opinion
Don't get me wrong, I love One Foot in the Grave. It is a classic British comedy show.
But I feel the later episodes are significantly funnier. They are nuanced and more cleverly written.
The first episode is like a comedy battering ram. It's relentless in its negativity.
The Over-the-Top Negativity
It's all about establishing Victor's grumpy persona. We get it! He’s unhappy.

But it feels forced, doesn’t it? The writers seemed determined to showcase his grumpy nature as quickly as possible, creating an initial impression that is, perhaps, a tad overwhelming.
It's like they were saying, "Look! This is going to be hilarious! Because this old man is perpetually miserable!"
Subtlety vs. Shock Value
Later episodes embraced subtlety. The humor came from the small absurdities of daily life.
The first episode leans into shock value and slapstick. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But it lacks the gentle charm of what was to come.

The show found its feet later, exploring the everyday frustrations with a lighter touch.
In Conclusion: Still Worth Watching (Obviously!)
I am not saying "Alarm Call" is terrible. Not at all! It laid the groundwork. It introduced us to Victor and Margaret.
But if you’re new to the show, maybe start with episode three or four. Then, come back to the first episode later. You might appreciate it more after you know and love the characters.
Or maybe you'll completely disagree with me. And that's fine! Let's debate in the comments. Just promise not to dig up my shrubs!
