Dustin Lance Black Under The Banner Of Heaven

Dustin Lance Black: Banner Bearer or Banner Burden? My Unpopular Opinion
Okay, let's talk Dustin Lance Black. Specifically, his work on Under the Banner of Heaven. I know, I know, true crime! Mormons! Andrew Garfield being all serious! What’s not to love?
Well, maybe a few things. And maybe, just maybe, I'm not entirely convinced it’s the masterpiece everyone claims.
Heavy Subject Matter, Light-ish Critique?
Look, the story is dark. Brutal, even. No one is denying the horror of the Lafferty brothers' crimes or the potential pitfalls of religious extremism.
Must Read
But something about the show felt… cautious? Like it was tiptoeing around some really juicy criticisms. Under the Banner of Heaven could have gone much deeper.
I wanted a sharper edge! I wanted less Garfield furrowing his brow and more actual, uncomfortable questions being asked. Was it afraid of offending? I think it was.
Andrew Garfield: Great Actor, Wrong Role?
Don't get me wrong, I adore Andrew Garfield. He’s amazing in everything.

But as Detective Jeb Pyre, the conflicted Mormon detective? I just wasn't buying it. It felt… forced. Like he was trying too hard to be serious, too hard to be the everyman grappling with his faith.
Maybe someone a little less, well, Andrew Garfieldy would have felt more authentic. Someone less known perhaps?
Where's the Nuance?
Here's where I might lose some of you. I think the show occasionally sacrificed nuance for drama. It felt like Dustin Lance Black and the team wanted to paint a clear picture of good versus evil.

But real life, especially faith, is rarely that black and white. I longed for moments of genuine empathy for even the most flawed characters.
Show me the internal struggles! Show me the good intentions gone horribly wrong! Give me complexity!
The Real Unsung Heroes
Honestly, the best parts of the show were the supporting actors. The wives, the elders, the ones who weren't Andrew Garfield. They brought a real sense of grounded authenticity.

They breathed life into the story. They showed us the human cost of blind faith and rigid traditions. More of them, less of the brooding detective, please!
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
So, here it is: Under the Banner of Heaven wasn't bad. Not at all. It was well-made, well-acted (mostly), and undeniably gripping at times. But it could have been so much more.
I think Dustin Lance Black has done better. I wanted to see some boldness. Some genuine risk taking.

I wanted to feel uncomfortable and question everything. Instead, I mostly just felt... mildly entertained. And maybe a little disappointed.
Am I alone in this? Probably. But hey, that's what unpopular opinions are for, right?
So, before you light me up in the comments, remember this: I’m just a gal with a keyboard and a slightly contrarian viewpoint. Judge me gently. Or don’t. Your call.
Ultimately, I wanted to feel challenged. And that just didn't happen.
