Dragon Ball Z English Dub Episode 1

The One Where Goku's Still a Kid (Kind Of)
Okay, let's be real. The first episode of the Dragon Ball Z English dub? It's… something. We're supposed to be witnessing the dawn of a legendary saga. But are we really?
It starts with a fishing trip. Goku, our hero, is catching a giant fish. He's a grown man with a tail and a kid's voice. It’s a little jarring, right?
Raditz: The Uninvited Brother
Then, BAM! Raditz shows up. He's got long hair and a bad attitude. He announces he's Goku's brother. A big reveal!
Must Read
Honestly, Raditz's entrance is pretty cool. He blasts a farmer with a power level of...5. A devastating blow, clearly.
But let's talk about the voice acting. Raditz sounds like he gargled gravel. It's memorable, sure. But is it...good?
Gohan's Debut
We meet Gohan! He's Goku's son. He is crying a lot. Understandable, considering a space alien just showed up threatening everyone.

Goku and Chi-Chi seem surprisingly chill about the whole "alien invasion" thing. Maybe they're used to weird stuff. After all, Goku did fight a talking dog once.
Gohan's power level is supposedly enormous, yet he's mostly just scared. Classic shonen protagonist origin story, I guess. Gotta start somewhere!
The Kidnapping
Raditz kidnaps Gohan. Goku is understandably upset. Time to go save his son!
But here's where the episode starts to feel... dated. The animation is noticeably older. The dialogue can be cheesy.

Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. It's part of the charm, right? It's like watching a comfy, nostalgic blanket.
Piccolo Joins the Party
Piccolo shows up. He's still trying to destroy the world, apparently. But now he has to team up with Goku. Oh, the irony!
Piccolo's voice is iconic. It's deep and menacing. Definitely a highlight of the early dub.

The episode ends with Goku and Piccolo facing off against Raditz. The fate of the world hangs in the balance! Or, at least, the fate of Gohan.
An Unpopular Opinion?
Here's my potentially controversial take. The first episode of the English dub of Dragon Ball Z isn't a masterpiece. There I said it.
Compared to later episodes, it's slow. The animation isn't as polished. The voice acting is still finding its footing.
But... it's still great! It's the starting point. It's where the legend begins. It sets the stage for all the screaming, powering up, and planet-busting action to come.

Plus, it’s fun to laugh at some of the awkward moments. It's part of the Dragon Ball Z experience. Right?
Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia. But there's something endearing about the clunkiness of that first episode. It's a reminder of simpler times. And a reminder that even legends have to start somewhere, even if it's with a giant fish and a gravel-voiced alien.
So, what do you think? Is the first episode underrated? Overrated? Or just perfectly...Dragon Ball Z?
