Dragon Ball Super Episode 74 English Sub

Okay, let's be real. We all have that one episode of Dragon Ball Super we skip. And mine? Yeah, it might just be episode 74 with the English subs.
Gohan Gets (a Little) Serious
It starts with Gohan agreeing to be a sparring partner. For Piccolo. You'd think that's exciting. Right?
Well, it was supposed to be training for the upcoming Tournament of Power. But it turned... weird. Like, awkwardly weird.
Must Read
I'm gonna say it: Gohan was kind of rusty! He's been studying too much, okay? Less books, more Kamehameha, Gohan!
The Great Saiyaman Returns? (Please No)
Thankfully, the Great Saiyaman costume remained in the closet. Thank goodness for small mercies.
Can we all agree that the Great Saiyaman is... cringe? It's like a superhero mid-life crisis. Poor Gohan.

Seriously though, his poses are embarrassing. Someone needs to stage an intervention. It's for his own good, I swear!
Piccolo's Tough Love
Piccolo is harsh. Super harsh. Like a green, Namekian drill sergeant.
He tells Gohan he's weak. Which, okay, maybe true at that moment, but still! That's rough buddy.
Is this character development? Or just Piccolo being Piccolo? I'm leaning towards the latter. He's always been a grumpy green guy.

The Real Problem
Here's my unpopular opinion: the pacing is slow. Like, molasses in January slow.
We spend so much time watching Gohan struggle. A little struggle is fine. Too much struggle is... boring.
I want planet-busting fights! I want screaming Saiyans! I don't want... studying. Please, I'm begging here.

A Necessary Evil?
Okay, okay. I know. It sets up Gohan's return to form. A comeback episode, if you will.
But couldn't we have had a more... engaging way to do it? Maybe a cool villain to fight? Or a training montage with explosions?
Listen, a little character development is important. But please make it entertaining. Don't just show me Gohan failing for 20 minutes straight.
The Verdict
So, is Dragon Ball Super episode 74 terrible? No. Is it the most exciting episode? Also no.

It's... fine. Perfectly adequate. Like beige wallpaper. Does the job, but no one's writing home about it.
I'll probably still skip it on my next rewatch. Don't judge me! I have limited time and a whole universe of Saiyan battles to enjoy!
Maybe you loved it? And that's okay! We can still be friends... as long as you don't make me watch Great Saiyaman again.
Let's face it, Dragon Ball Super has peaks and valleys. This one just happens to be chilling in the valley.
