Did Someone Hang Themselves On Wizard Of Oz

Did Someone Hang Themselves On Wizard Of Oz

Okay, let's talk Wizard of Oz. That classic movie everyone loves. But did anyone else notice something... a little weird in the background?

The Infamous Scene

You know the scene. Dorothy and the Scarecrow are skipping down the Yellow Brick Road. Then, in the background, something dark swings from a tree.

Was it a bird? A plane?

Nope. For years, people have been saying it was a hanging Munchkin! I know, right? Dark!

MGM, of course, denied it. They claimed it was just a shadow. Or maybe a large bird. Yeah, a bird the size of a small person.

But come on! Has anyone seen that bird in any other scene? I think not!

"It's just a costumed bird," they said.

My Unpopular Opinion

Here's my truth. I think it WAS a prop person, not a Munchkin. Maybe a dummy to test the wind or the camera angle.

But here is my crazy opinion. I think it's equally possible a tired costume staffer took a nap in a field prop and swung just as the scene rolled.

Think about it! That set was HUGE! People were probably exhausted. Accidents happen!

And let's be real, the Wizard of Oz was made a long time ago. Workplace safety wasn't exactly a top priority. I will be right back I am gonna check this claim from Wikipedia.

The Wikipedia Debunk

Ok I am back. The bird explanation is not as crazy. Wikipedia says: "The 'hanging man' is now widely believed to be an optical illusion caused by a large bird (likely a crane or a peacock) stretching its wings and moving".

OK so I may be wrong! So who am I to question the mighty Wikipedia!? Let us continue to speculate for fun.

Why We Want to Believe

I think part of why this rumor persists is because it's juicy. It adds a dark twist to a seemingly innocent film. Makes you wonder if there are other hidden secrets.

It adds a layer of intrigue to Oz. A bit of unexpected edge in a technicolor dream. Honestly, who doesn't love a good movie mystery?

I mean, it’s not like the movie wasn’t already a little freaky. Flying monkeys? A melting witch? A guy with no brain? Pretty disturbing stuff for a kids movie, right?

The Munchkin Mystery

Let's not forget the Munchkins themselves! Rumors abound about their on-set behavior. Apparently, they were a rowdy bunch.

So, is it REALLY that far-fetched to think that one of them might have gotten into some on-set shenanigans? Let’s face it. Things went sideways in Hollywood, even in the so called Golden Era.

Maybe it wasn't suicide at all! Maybe it was just a very elaborate prank gone wrong. Or perhaps a case of a runaway stagehand.

Final Thoughts: It's All Just a Movie

Ultimately, we'll probably never know for sure. The "hanging Munchkin" will likely remain a movie legend. A creepy little detail that adds to the Wizard of Oz's enduring appeal.

So next time you watch the movie, keep an eye on the background. And remember, sometimes, the most innocent-looking things have a dark side.

But hey, at least it's not as scary as those flying monkeys. Seriously, those things gave me nightmares.
