Dark Side Of The Ring Season 2 Episode 9

Okay, wrestling fans, let’s talk about that Dark Side of the Ring episode everyone seems to worship: Season 2, Episode 9, about Emilio Charles Jr.
The Cult of Emilio?
I know, I know. Some people think it’s the most heartbreaking, most tragic, most everything episode of the whole darn series.
But, uh, am I the only one who found it… a tad overhyped? Don't get me wrong, the man had struggles.
Must Read
My Unpopular Opinion
Hear me out before you spear me through a table. The episode's definitely sad, I'm not denying that.
But sometimes I feel like wrestling documentaries fall into this trap of over-sensationalizing things. It becomes less about genuine storytelling.
More about piling on the melodrama. Maybe it's just me, though.
He Was A Star, I Get It
Look, Emilio Charles Jr. was clearly a talented performer. He had the moves and charisma.

The interviews in the episode painted a picture of a man under immense pressure. A legacy, an addiction, the whole shebang.
That's a heavy burden, absolutely. Still, I've seen heavier.
The Problem with the Formula
Dark Side of the Ring has a formula, right? Wrestler achieves fame.
Wrestler battles demons. Wrestler faces tragedy. Cue the sad music.
Rinse and repeat. It's effective, sure. But sometimes it feels…predictable.

Where's the Nuance?
I wanted more nuance. More depth beyond the "tragic figure" label.
Did they explore his impact on the wrestling scene? His relationships outside of the spotlight?
Or did they just focus on the downward spiral? I think the answer is clear.
The "Tragic Ending" Trope
The episode leans heavily on the "tragic ending" trope. I almost expected it.
It's like, we know going in that things aren't going to end well. It kind of deflates the tension.

I'd prefer a little more…suspense, maybe? Or at least a different spin.
Other Episodes Did It Better
Honestly, I think other Dark Side of the Ring episodes handled similar themes better. Remember the Benoit two-parter?
That was disturbing and unsettling. The Owen Hart episode was powerful and moving.
This one, for me, just didn't quite hit the same emotional mark. It felt a bit…surface level.
Am I a Monster?
Maybe I'm a heartless monster who enjoys wrestling with a side of schadenfreude.

But I think I'm just craving something a little more…original from my wrestling documentaries.
Or maybe Emilio Charles Jr.'s story just didn't resonate with me as much as it did with others. Which is totally fine!
Let's Debate!
So, wrestling fans, what do you think? Am I completely off base here?
Did you find the Emilio Charles Jr. episode of Dark Side of the Ring to be a masterpiece of tragic storytelling?
Or did you, like me, find it a little…overrated? Let's discuss! I am prepared for anything.
