Cowboy Bebop Isn't Supposed To Be Good

Okay, hear me out. Cowboy Bebop? Overrated. I said it! Prepare for the internet to come for me. But honestly, does it really hold up?
I know, I know. "Space Western!" "Cool soundtrack!" We've heard it all. But let's be real for a sec. It's a mess! A glorious, stylish mess, maybe. But a mess nonetheless.
The Plot? What Plot?
Seriously, what's the main storyline? They bounce around chasing bounties. They whine about money. Then some random backstory pops up. It's more like a vibe than a narrative.
Must Read
Don't get me wrong, the individual episodes can be fun. "Pierrot le Fou"? Terrifying. But the overall arc? It's like a scavenger hunt for meaning in a landfill.
And speaking of characters... Let's talk about Spike Spiegel. The epitome of cool, right? Nah. He's mostly just a sad, brooding guy with a cigarette glued to his lips. He is just running around with no purpose.

Jet Black: The Dad We All Need (But Maybe Not in Space)
Jet Black is cool. He is the responsible one. He's basically just trying to keep the Bebop from falling apart. Both literally and figuratively.
Then there's Faye Valentine. Sexy amnesiac con artist. Her backstory is tragic, sure. But mostly she just steals stuff and causes problems.

And Ed? Bless her heart. She's a genius kid hacker. But also completely bonkers. She makes zero sense, but you love her anyway.
Animation Hiccups and 90s Weirdness
Let's not forget the animation. It looked great...for 1998. Some of those fight scenes? They're more janky than fluid. But some might argue that's part of the charm.
And the 90s anime tropes are strong with this one. Gratuitous fanservice? Check. Angsty monologues? Double-check. Random explosions for no reason? You betcha!

Look, I'm not saying Cowboy Bebop is bad. Just...not as amazing as everyone claims. It's more like a guilty pleasure.
The Music: Okay, Fine, the Music is Good.
Okay, fine. The soundtrack slaps. Yoko Kanno is a genius. No arguments here. It is the best part of the entire show.

But even the best music can't save a show from being...meh. The music does elevate every scene, though.
So, is Cowboy Bebop a masterpiece? I say, it's a beautiful, flawed gem. A fun ride, even if it doesn't always make sense. It's like a really cool dream you can't quite remember properly the next day. A stylish mess that somehow still captures the hearts of many.
Maybe I'm just a contrarian. Maybe I'm missing something. But I think we can all agree that Cowboy Bebop is at least a little bit overhyped. What do you think?
