Bone That Can Be Found On A Pirate Flag

Let's talk pirate flags! Ahoy, mateys, and all that jazz. Everyone knows the Jolly Roger. It’s the skull and crossbones, right?

But have you ever really looked? Like, really looked? Because I have an unpopular opinion. Prepare to have your eye patch knocked off.

It's Not Just Any Bone

We see those white sticks underneath the skull. They're crossed. They’re bones, obviously. But which ones?

Most people assume they're just…bones. Generic bones. Rib bones, leg bones, who cares? But I think that's a little too simple, don't you?

My Bone to Pick (Get it?)

I'm here to argue they are clavicles! Yes, the collarbones! Stay with me, this is important.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "But they look straight!" Okay, true. Pirate flag artists weren’t exactly anatomy professors.

They're pirates, not doctors! Artistic license, people! It’s a thing.

Consider the alternatives. Are they femurs? Too long and thick. Ribs? Too curved. And frankly, ribs are a bit boring for a pirate flag. They're on everyone!

The Jolly Roger needs something a bit more...stylish. A bit more...clavicle-y.

Why Clavicles Though?

Think about it. Clavicles sit right at the shoulders. What do pirates use their shoulders for?

Swinging swords! Loading cannons! Hoisting sails! Shoulders are important. Clavicles connect everything.

Plus, "crossbones" sounds way cooler than "cross-ribs." "Cross-femurs" just sounds like a painful yoga pose.

Clavicles are also delicate. Easy to break. Maybe the pirates were trying to make a statement? We're fragile but fierce!

Or maybe... they just liked the way they looked. Who knows? Pirate fashion is notoriously unpredictable.

I Rest My Case (and My Clavicles)

I know I’m likely tilting at windmills. Arguing with history. But I still think it’s a fun thought.

Next time you see a Jolly Roger, take a closer look. Imagine those crossed bones are clavicles.

Doesn’t it just make the whole thing a little bit more…pirate-y? A little bit more…anatomically intriguing?

I challenge you to find another bone that works as well! I dare you!
