Black History Month Journal Prompts

Black History Month Journal Prompts

Okay, so last week I was trying to explain the concept of "microaggressions" to my very well-meaning (but slightly clueless) Uncle Jerry. Bless his heart, he kept saying things like, "But...I don't see color!" Which, you know, isn't exactly the point, Jerry. It got me thinking though: how often do we really, truly, deeply reflect on the experiences of Black people, beyond the headlines and the history books?

Enter: Black History Month. But let's be real, it shouldn't just be a month-long thing, right? It should be a catalyst for continuous learning and understanding. And that's where journaling comes in! Think of it as your personal exploration space to really dig deep.

Why Journaling for Black History Month?

Look, we all know the highlights: Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman. Absolute legends, no doubt. But there's so much more to the story! So much nuance, so much complexity, so much…stuff! Journaling helps you move beyond the surface-level summaries and engage with the richness and diversity of Black history and culture. Plus, it's a great way to check your own biases and assumptions – something we all need to do.

Consider it your mental excavation site. You're unearthing thoughts, feelings, and insights that might otherwise remain buried. Think Indiana Jones, but instead of ancient artifacts, you're uncovering your own understanding. (Okay, maybe it's not quite as exciting, but you get the idea!)

Journal Prompts to Get You Started

Alright, let's get to the good stuff! Here are some prompts to get your journaling juices flowing. Don't feel like you have to answer them all – just pick one that speaks to you. And remember, there are no wrong answers! This is your space. Go wild!

  • Prompt 1: Research a Black historical figure you know little about. What surprised you most about their story? How did their experiences shape their contributions?

(Side note: Don't just Google the first name that pops up. Go a little deeper! Explore different fields like science, art, or sports.)

  • Prompt 2: Reflect on a time you witnessed or experienced racial injustice. How did it make you feel? What, if anything, did you do or say? What would you do differently now?

(This one might be tough, but important. Be honest with yourself.)

  • Prompt 3: Explore a piece of Black art (music, literature, film, etc.) that resonates with you. What emotions does it evoke? What messages does it convey about Black identity and experience?

(Pro Tip: Find something outside your usual comfort zone. You might discover a new favorite artist!)

  • Prompt 4: What does Black History Month mean to you personally? How can you incorporate the lessons and values of Black history into your daily life?

(Think beyond February! How can you be an ally and advocate year-round?)

  • Prompt 5: Imagine you could have a conversation with any figure from Black history. Who would it be and what would you ask them?

(This one is fun! Don't be afraid to get creative.)

Beyond the Prompts: Keep the Momentum Going!

These prompts are just a starting point. The real magic happens when you let your curiosity lead you. Read books by Black authors, watch documentaries about Black history, and engage in conversations with Black individuals about their experiences. (But remember to listen more than you speak!).

Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate, remember, and learn. But it's also a call to action. Let's use this time to challenge ourselves, expand our understanding, and work towards a more just and equitable world for all. Happy journaling! (And maybe send Uncle Jerry this article…just kidding…mostly.)
