Anohana The Flower We Saw That Day Summary

Okay, let's talk about Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. You've probably heard of it. Maybe you've even cried your eyes out watching it.
The story is about a group of childhood friends. They drifted apart after a tragic accident. The accident involved Menma, who, spoiler alert (but really, is it a spoiler anymore?), dies.
The Ghostly Reunion
Years later, Jinta, now a recluse, starts seeing Menma's ghost. Suddenly, middle school is very different. She still looks like she did when she was a child.
Must Read
She doesn't remember why she's back. That's the whole point, right? Her wish needs to be fulfilled. To do this, she needs her friends to help her.
Of course, the friends are all messed up too. Childhood trauma does that to you. They have their own issues and secrets to deal with. All related to Menma's death.
Reliving the Past
They hesitantly reunite. There is plenty of awkwardness, hurt feelings, and unresolved guilt. Basically, imagine your worst school reunion, but with a ghost.

Everyone suspects Jinta is hallucinating. Understandably, they wonder, is this guy crazy? Honestly, I would be skeptical too.
Anaru, Yukiatsu, Tsurumi, and Poppo, all struggle. They struggle to cope and accept the situation. Can they face their own role in what happened?
The Great Un-said
The anime centers around unspoken feelings. It's all about the what-ifs and should-haves. So much angst!

Everyone secretly liked each other back then. Of course, they were awkward pre-teens. And they couldn't express it properly. Who could?
Anohana explores grief and the lasting impact of loss. It's a tearjerker, that's for sure. Bring on the tissues!
The Fireworks Finale
The ending is... well, it's an ending. There are fireworks. Get ready to cry even more. Seriously, you've been warned.
They try to grant Menma's wish. This act helps them reconcile with their past. And with each other.

It's all very emotional and cathartic. Even if it feels a little contrived at times. Hey, I'm just saying.
My Unpopular Opinion?
Okay, here's where I might get some flak. I think Anohana is... overrated. Gasp!
Hear me out! It's beautifully animated and the music is amazing. And yes, I cried. But... the melodrama can be a bit much.

It feels like it's trying too hard to make you cry. It's almost manipulative in its emotional intensity. I like my tears to be earned organically.
It's Still Good, Though!
Don't get me wrong, it's still a good anime. And I understand why people love it so much. The themes are relatable.
We've all experienced loss and regret. Everyone can sympathize with the characters struggles. But, sometimes it feels a bit... over the top.
So, there you have it. My slightly controversial take on Anohana. It's a tearjerker, but maybe not the best tearjerker. But that's just my opinion!
Watch it and decide for yourself. You will probably still need tissues.
