Anime Where The Mc Loses His Memory

Okay, let's talk about something that's been bugging me. It's about anime, and it involves a very specific trope: the MC losing their memory. I know, I know, it's a classic. But hear me out!
Memory Loss: A Convenient Plot Device?
Seriously, how many times have we seen this? The main character gets bonked on the head, blasted with weird magic, or just wakes up with a blank slate. Suddenly, they don't remember their friends, their family, or even what they ate for breakfast.
And of course, this always kicks off some grand adventure! Discovering their past, fighting forgotten enemies, and maybe even falling in love again. It's like the writers hit the reset button, but is it always good?
Must Read
Is It Overused? (Unpopular Opinion Incoming!)
Here's where my unpopular opinion comes in. I think it's overdone! It feels like a shortcut sometimes. Like the writers couldn't figure out a better way to introduce conflict or develop the character.
Don't get me wrong, when done well, it can be amazing. But when it's just a lazy way to create drama? Ugh. My eyes roll so far back into my head, I can practically see my brain.

Examples We All Know (and Maybe Love a Little)
Let's be real, we can all name a few anime where this happens. Think of Certain Magical Index. Poor Touma constantly loses his memories!
And what about those isekai anime? "Oops, I died and now I have amnesia in a new world!" It's almost a requirement at this point.
I am not saying these are all bad shows, I love some of them but the frequency of MCs with amnesia is getting a bit much.

When It Works (and When It Doesn't)
So, when does the "amnesiac MC" trope actually work? For me, it's when the memory loss is integral to the plot. When it reveals something truly shocking and changes the entire narrative.
It also works when the character's struggle to regain their memories is genuine and emotional. We need to feel their confusion and pain.
But when it's just a plot device to drag things out or avoid explaining complicated backstories? That's when I check out.

Beyond the Amnesia: What We Really Want
Maybe, just maybe, I'm tired of seeing characters conveniently forget their past. I want to see more complex characters with existing problems. With memories, flaws and full of personality from the get-go.
Give me characters who have to deal with their mistakes, their relationships, and their own internal conflicts without wiping the slate clean. Let the MC deal with who they used to be.
What do you think? Am I being too harsh? Or are you also secretly tired of the "amnesiac MC" trope? Let's discuss in the comments!

At the end of the day, it's all about the execution. But maybe, just maybe, it's time for anime writers to find some new ways to surprise us.
Please don't get me wrong, this is my humble opinion. I am not saying every show is bad. But if another MC wakes up not knowing their name, I might scream into the void.
