All In The Family Season 8 Episode 20

Okay, people, let's talk about All In The Family. Specifically, season 8, episode 20.
It's called "Edith's Final Respects." I know, heavy, right?
The Plot Thickens (Sort Of)
Basically, a woman dies. She was someone Edith knew. And Edith feels like she has to go to the funeral.
Must Read
The problem? This woman wasn't exactly Edith's biggest fan. Or friend. Or even acquaintance, really.
And Archie? Well, you can imagine how thrilled he is.
Why I Think It's Underrated
Now, here's where my possibly unpopular opinion comes in. I actually like this episode. A lot.

It's not one of the laugh-out-loud classics. But it’s got something special. Something real.
The Edith Factor
This episode showcases Edith's incredible empathy. Even for someone who wasn’t always nice to her.
That's pure Edith, isn't it? Always finding the good, even when it's buried deep.
She just wants to pay her final respects. It's a simple act of kindness.
Archie's Grumbling Brilliance
Of course, Archie complains the entire time. The man could find something to grumble about at a free beer convention.
But underneath the bluster, you see a tiny crack. A hint of understanding. Maybe even a flicker of respect for Edith's good heart.
Carroll O'Connor plays that perfectly. He makes Archie's journey, however small, believable.
The Funeral Home Fun
The funeral home scenes are gold. The awkward interactions. The forced small talk.

It's all so relatable. We’ve all been there, right? Stuck in a situation we’d rather escape.
All In The Family was always great at capturing those uncomfortable truths about everyday life.
The Unpopular Bit
Here's the thing: many people consider this episode a bit... boring. Not enough laughs. Too much "heart."
I get it. We watch sitcoms to laugh. But sometimes, the best sitcoms are the ones that make us think too.

And "Edith's Final Respects" does that. It makes you think about kindness. About forgiveness. About being a decent human being.
So, What's the Verdict?
Maybe I'm just a sap. Maybe I'm overly sentimental.
But I think this episode is a gem. A quiet, understated gem that deserves a little more love. Especially from Archie.
Give it another watch. You might just find yourself agreeing with my unpopular opinion. Or not. But at least you'll have spent 25 minutes with the Bunkers.
