All In The Family Season 7 Episode 24

Okay, let's talk All In The Family. Specifically, Season 7, Episode 24. You know, the one everyone thinks they remember.
It's called "Edith's Crisis of Faith, Part 2." Sounds intense, right? And it is, for Edith.
Edith's Struggle: Real Talk
Edith is, well, Edith. Sweet, kind, and always trying to see the best in everyone. Even Archie.
Must Read
This episode tackles a serious topic: Edith grappling with her faith after a traumatic event. Heavy stuff for a sitcom!
Everyone always praises this episode. Says it's groundbreaking, Emmy-worthy, a masterpiece of television. I get it. It's powerful.
But here's my unpopular opinion: Is it overrated? Just a little?
The Problem with "Crisis of Faith"
Don't get me wrong, Jean Stapleton is phenomenal. Her performance is heart-wrenching. I wouldn't dare argue against that.
It's just...the episode itself feels a bit...preachy. Almost too on-the-nose.
Maybe it's because I'm used to Archie Bunker's brand of subtle (okay, not subtle) bigotry. But the drama feels forced at times.
The storyline is tough. Edith almost being assaulted is dark. It's understandable that she would question her faith.

But the way it's all presented feels a little... melodramatic. I found it a little too much.
Where's the Humor?
All In The Family, at its core, is a comedy. Even when dealing with serious subjects, it usually finds a way to make you laugh.
This episode? Not so much. It's almost entirely devoid of humor. Which is fine, if that's what they were going for.
But I miss the witty banter. I miss Mike's exasperated eye rolls. I miss Archie being, well, Archie. Even in his awfulness.

The lack of humor made the episode feel heavier. It felt less like an episode of All In The Family and more like a Very Special Episode of something else.
And maybe that's the point. Maybe it was supposed to be different. But it still didn't completely win me over.
Final Thoughts (Prepare for More Unpopular Opinions)
Look, I appreciate what the episode tried to do. It addressed a difficult subject with sensitivity and respect. And Jean Stapleton deserves all the awards.
But, to me, other episodes from the series are more impactful. Episodes that blend humor and heart in a more seamless way.

I'm thinking about "Sammy's Visit" or "Two's a Crowd." Those episodes are amazing.
So, yeah, I said it. "Edith's Crisis of Faith, Part 2" is a good episode. But it's not my favorite. And I think it's a tad overrated.
Now, tell me why I'm wrong. (But be nice. Edith wouldn't want us fighting.)
Just kidding! (Sort of.) What do you think? Was it the best, the worst, or somewhere in between? Let's discuss!
