Okay, folks, let's talk about something near and dear to every anime (and manga) fan's heart: Akira. Specifically, that gorgeous 35th Anniversary Box Set that got a reprint in 2021.

But here's where I might, maybe, potentially, be controversial: is it all worth the hype? Or more specifically, the price tag?

Look, don't get me wrong. Katsuhiro Otomo is a genius. Akira is a masterpiece. This is manga history!
But let's be real. How many of us actually, truly need another copy of Akira? I'm raising my hand here.
I already own the individual volumes. I even had a weird, slightly beat-up version I bought from a comic book store in 2005. I love it, of course.
And that brings me to my point. Is this box set for me? Or is it for the idea of me?
The Collector's Conundrum
The collector's edition itch is a powerful one. We all feel it! It whispers sweet nothings about completeness and rarity.
It convinces us that we need that limited edition, even if it means eating ramen for a week. Don't look at me like that! You know it’s true.
So, you tell me, why is it so irresistable? Nostalgia? The sheer joy of owning something special?
Or maybe it's just the fear of missing out. Which, let's be honest, is a pretty good marketing strategy.
Is It Really Better?
The reprint looks great. The colors pop. The paper feels expensive. I give you that!
But does it fundamentally change the experience of reading Akira? Does it make Tetsuo's transformation any more terrifying? Does it make Kaneda any cooler?
Spoiler alert: it doesn't. The story remains the same, the impact is the same. It's still Akira.

If you're a die-hard Akira fan with cash to burn, go for it. You won't regret owning this. That box set is beautiful. I want it too.
But if you're on a budget, or if you already own Akira in some form, maybe... just maybe... you can skip this one. Your call!
Instead, maybe buy a cool Akira poster. Or re-watch the movie (again!). Or just spend the money on something else that brings you joy.
And remember, the real treasure is the story itself. The epic narrative, the groundbreaking art. That's what truly matters.
So go read Akira. Any version will do. You’ll have a great time.
