Ages Of The Cast Of Pretty Little Liars

Wait, They Were How Old?!
Let's talk Pretty Little Liars. We all binge-watched it, right? We were hooked on the drama, the mystery, and, of course, the fashion.
But did you ever stop to think about how old the cast actually was? Because I did. And let me tell you, it messed with my head a little.
High School? More Like Higher Education!
The show starts with the Liars supposed to be 16. Freshmen! Full of teenage angst! First loves! You know the drill.
Must Read
Except... the actors were, shall we say, a little... seasoned. I mean, some of them were practically adults playing teenagers. No shade, though!
Think about Troian Bellisario (Spencer Hastings). She was actually closer to 25 when the show started. Twenty-five pretending to be sixteen? Wild!
The Age Game: Who Fooled Us the Most?
Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery) was around 21. Still a bit of a stretch for a high school freshman, but more believable.

Ashley Benson (Hanna Marin) was also about 21. They all looked great, don't get me wrong. It just adds a layer of... interesting perspective to the show.
Then there's Shay Mitchell (Emily Fields). She was the oldest of the bunch. Twenty-four when the show started! That's almost a decade older than her character!
Unpopular Opinion Time!
Okay, here's where it gets controversial. I actually think the age difference helped the show. Hear me out!

The older actors brought a certain maturity to the roles. Maybe that's why they were able to handle all the crazy plot twists and dramatic reveals. Just maybe.
Their acting experience probably helped them portray the complex emotions. Those emotions made the show super believable... despite the, um, age gap.
Adult Problems, Teenage Faces
Let's be honest, the Liars dealt with some seriously adult issues. Stalking, blackmail, murder... that's not your average high school experience!
Maybe the older actors were better equipped to handle the darker themes. They brought a depth to the characters that younger actors might have struggled with. Maybe!

Plus, let's face it: older actors have more refined acting skills. It's just a fact! They can cry on cue better. That is a very important skill for the role.
Would It Have Been the Same with Younger Actors?
It's a thought experiment, really. Imagine if they'd cast actual 16-year-olds. Would the show have been as successful?
Maybe it would have been more "realistic." But would it have been as captivating? I'm not so sure.

There's something about the polished performances of the older actors that made the show so addictive.
They just knew how to sell the drama!
So, Thanks, PLL Casting Directors!
In the end, I'm not complaining. I loved Pretty Little Liars. I binge-watched every episode, gasped at every twist, and shipped every couple.
And while I'm still a little mind-blown by the age differences, I appreciate the actors. I appreciate how much they brought to the show.
So, thank you, Pretty Little Liars casting directors! You might have bent the truth a little, but you gave us a great TV show. We should not forget this.
