A Series Of Unfortunate Events Season 1 Episode 2

Okay, picture this: you’re a kid. Your parents are…gone. And suddenly, you're stuck with a relative. Not just any relative, mind you. We’re talking the absolutely, positively WORST relative imaginable. Buckle up, because that's the Baudelaire orphans' life in A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Episode 2? It's a hilarious disaster.
Welcome to the Terrible World of Count Olaf
Episode 2 picks up right after the truly awful events of the first episode. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are still reeling. They're sent to live with Count Olaf. He's their nearest relative, but he is a terrible choice.
Count Olaf is played by the amazing Neil Patrick Harris. He chews the scenery in the best way possible. He's greedy, he's selfish, and he's clearly after the Baudelaire's fortune.

Why is This Episode So Good?
First off, the show is incredibly stylish. The sets are quirky and gothic. The costumes are delightfully over-the-top.
Then there's the narration by Lemony Snicket. He warns you about all the terrible things about to happen. It's both funny and unsettling, a very unique feeling.

The humor is dark and quirky. It's not laugh-out-loud funny all the time. More like a slow burn of absurdity. It’s kind of like watching a train wreck in slow motion, but you know, a really entertaining train wreck.
Olaf's Awful Plan Unfolds
In this episode, Count Olaf unveils his ridiculously transparent plan. It is to get his hands on the Baudelaire's inheritance. He forces the children to do chores. He starves them. He even makes them sleep in one room.

He even makes them perform in his terrible play! Can you believe it? This is where the brilliance of the show really shines. The play is so bad, it's good.
The kids aren't stupid, though. Violet, the eldest, is a genius inventor. Klaus is a bookworm with an encyclopedic memory. And Sunny, the baby, has surprisingly sharp teeth and a knack for biting!
The Baudelaires Fight Back (Kind Of)
The Baudelaire children start to realize Count Olaf is up to no good. They try to tell the adults around them. But, sadly, the adults are all completely clueless. This makes the show even more frustrating (and hilarious).

The episode culminates in a truly outrageous scene. It is during the play where Count Olaf tries to pull off his scheme. Will he succeed? You'll have to watch to find out!
One of the best part is the show doesn't talk down to you. Even though it's based on children's books, it deals with serious themes. These includes grief, injustice, and the importance of family. This is presented in a way that's both engaging and thought-provoking.
