A Different World Season 3 Episode 1

Okay, let's talk A Different World. Season 3, Episode 1. "Here's to Old Friends." It's like a warm hug...or is it?
Hello Hillman, My Old Friend?
Everyone's back at Hillman! Summer's over. Time for classes and drama. What could possibly go wrong?
First off, Dwayne Wayne. Still rocking those flip-up glasses. Still chasing after Denise Huxtable...who, let's be honest, barely notices him. Relatable, right?
Must Read
Denise's Decisions
Denise is back from Africa! She's all enlightened and...married? To Martin? Wait, what? This always felt rushed.
Don't get me wrong, I liked Martin. He seems nice. But Denise and Martin? It's like pairing peanut butter with...I don't know, pickles?
I know, I know, Lisa Bonet was leaving. But did they have to do Denise like that? Couldn't she have just studied abroad longer?

Honestly, this marriage plot device felt like a quick way to write her off. Did anyone else feel this way, or am I alone here?
The Love Square Intensifies
Ron and Dwayne are still at it. They fight for the same girl. It's a classic college trope.
Except, Kinu, the object of their affection, feels more like a plot device than a fully fleshed character. Let's be real.
She's pretty and artistic. Sure. But what else? I never really connected with her. Sorry, not sorry.

Kim and Whitley: The Real MVPs
Thank goodness for Kim Reese and Whitley Gilbert. These two are the saving grace of this episode.
Kim is finally stepping into her own. No longer just the cute, naive freshman. She's got opinions and isn't afraid to use them.
And Whitley? Well, she's still Whitley. Preppy, judgmental, and secretly hilarious. I wouldn't have her any other way.
Her constant jabs at everyone provide much-needed comic relief. Plus, her style is always on point. Even if her views aren't.

The Unpopular Opinion Section
Okay, here's where I might get some hate. I never really bought the Denise/Martin thing. They just didn't click for me.
It always felt like a way to shake things up. A dramatic plot twist. But it just felt…off.
And while I love the original cast, sometimes I wish they hadn't tried so hard to keep everyone together. Fresh blood is good! Especially in a show about college life.
Final Thoughts
"Here's to Old Friends" is a solid start to Season 3. But it also highlights some of the show's growing pains. The cast changed, and the dynamics shifted.

The storyline of Denise felt rushed. It didn't do her character justice. However, the episode is still fun.
Despite the flaws, there is still A Different World charm. I can't help but smile when I watch it. Even with all its quirks.
Did this episode age well? Maybe not perfectly. Is it still entertaining? Absolutely. It's a classic for a reason.
What do you think? Am I being too harsh? Let me know in the comments!
