A Country Doctor By Franz Kafka Summary

Okay, let's talk Kafka. Specifically, A Country Doctor. You know, the one you probably skimmed in college?

I'm here to tell you something potentially controversial. I think it's...kinda funny.

Kafka's Kooky Cure

So, a doctor gets a call. It's an emergency! But his horse is dead. Classic start, right?

Then, poof! Mysterious horses appear! They're big, white, and vaguely unsettling. He's off to his patient!

These horses, where did they come from? He did not even question them and just took off with them.

He doesn't even say "thanks" to the groom. That is so rude!

A Sickly Situation

He arrives to find a young boy. The boy claims he's fine. But the family insists he's deathly ill.

Our Country Doctor isn't convinced. I mean, who really knows what's wrong with themself?

And then... the wound. Oh, the wound! It's described in such gruesome detail. I mean, Kafka really lays it on thick.

Two giant worms are in the wound. Ewwwwwwww.

Unpopular Opinion Time

Here's my take: Kafka is messing with us. He's taking the absolute mickey!

The doctor's incompetence is almost comical. He doesn't seem to know what he's doing. At all.

And the family? They're just as clueless. They seem more interested in blaming the doctor than actually helping the boy.

Why is the patient not crying in pain? Why did they just let the doctor go ahead?

The Treatment (or Lack Thereof)

The doctor's "treatment" is singing. Yes, singing! To a festering wound. Makes total sense, right?

The family strips him naked and puts him in bed with the boy. Talk about violating medical ethics!

At this point, I'm convinced Kafka is writing a dark comedy. A very, very dark comedy.

And that wound? It is huge! What a bad dream!

The Escape (or Attempted Escape)

Our doctor flees. Back to his phantom horses. Despair is his companion now.

He's lost faith in his ability to heal. Probably because he never had it in the first place!

He is naked on a horse riding into the dark night. Good luck to him!

The Kafkaesque Conclusion

So, what's the point? Is it about alienation? The futility of existence?

Maybe. Or maybe it's just Kafka having a laugh. A very strange, very unsettling laugh.

Or maybe, just maybe, it's Kafka holding a mirror to our own absurdities. Our own blind faith in "experts" who might not know any more than we do.

What a ride! Kafka can be really crazy with this one.
